Posted April 22, 2009, in Announcements.

We are excited to announce the very first “Healthy Choices Champion” national awardee: Heartland Community Action Agency, Inc., located in Cosmos, MN.

The “Healthy Choices Champion” National HALO Award is given to early childhood educators who implement HALO in their facility and do so with enthusiasm about making a difference in the lives of their little ones. Heartland Community Action Agency, based in Cosmos, MN, has implemented HALO since 2005 in its Head Start program and is the first recipient of the “Healthy Choices Champion” award. This organization is an important asset to many local communities, especially when it comes to the little ones.

Cathy Nelson Messer is the Head Start Special Needs Area Manager for Heartland Community Action Agency and leads the HALO program locally. “HALO teaches healthy choices within a social-emotional relationship as well as in terms of substance abuse. I hope that others are seeing HALO as an opportunity for primary prevention,” shares Messer. “Many programs reach out to youth in middle school or later, but for many kids, it’s already too late at 5th grade.”

Congratulations to the educators at Heartland Community Action Agency, Inc.. Our sincere appreciation goes out to you for being such a great asset to your community and the children you teach. Keep up the great work!
