Posted October 11, 2011, in Announcements.

Healthy Alternatives for Little Ones (HALO) is celebrating 20th years of healthy choices! In 1991, HALO was created by Heartland Family Service as an early intervention to prevent use of alcohol, tobacco and drugs by building protective factors in children ages 3 to 6. HALO’s comprehensive 12 unit curriculum was designed to build social and emotional skills while empowering young children to make healthy choices.

Developed for implementation in any child care setting HALO can be taught in-home, at child care centers, pre-school, and kindergartens. The HALO curriculum includes a family involvement component that provides parents with the learning objectives for each unit and ideas for reinforcing the lessons at home. An English and Spanish teacher training DVD is included in the HALO Curriculum and Training Kit.

HALO is an evidence based program worthy of national recognition and distribution by the Substance Abuse and Mental Health System Administration’s (SAMHSA) National Registry of Evidence-based Programs and Practices (NREPP). Since the HALO’s inception, over 10,000 children have participated in the HALO program at 151 sites in Nebraska and Iowa and 52 sites nationally.

Most recently, when the HALO staff visited Lori Huffman’s Child Development class at Westside High School in Omaha, Nebraska, two students shared with peers how the HALO lessons from their preschool days still impact their lives. When they were younger, they remembered how much it bothered them that their parents smoked so they decided they were not going to smoke. Now as seniors in high school, when given the opportunity to smoke or drink, they reflect on the HALO lessons that taught them to say NO to harmful choices, and instead they continue to make healthy choices today.
